RALEIGH, N.C. -- Led by seven points from senior midfielder Katie Burnet, the Meredith College lacrosse team downed the visiting Marymount Saints 15-10 in Saturday's season opener. The Angels controlled the pace outshooting visitors 36-18, and gathered 16 draws to Marymount's 10 for the win.

Burnet opened the scoring during the first four minutes of play with an unassisted goal. Rookie Holly Hite controlled the next draw, but an Angels miscue led to back-to-back goals from the Saints to edge into the lead.

Freshman Julie Capretti teamed up with Burnet to tie the match before Capretti went on her own scoring frenzy netting four consecutive for the Angels.

Play continued back-and-forth during the next 4:22 with neither team able to maintain control of the ball.  Victoria Doyle ended the drought with her first of two goals to give the Angels a 7-2 advantage with 2:18 remaining in the half. 

With 1:17 left before the intermission, Jennifer Halvorson picked up a deflected Doyle attempt and dished it back to Doyle to complete the scoring during the first 30 minutes of play.

Marymount battled back in the second period outscoring Meredith 8-7, but the Avenging Angels led by at least five goals down the stretch for the win.

Burnet led iwth six goals, adding one assist, and Capretti's four-goal series combined with a pair of assists to give the rookie six points during her collegiate debut. Doyle contributed two goals with seven draw controls, five groundballs, and eight caused turnovers in the win.

A trio of Saints recorded two goals on the day with Jessica Crew adding an assist to lead Marymount with three total points. Meredith's Katie Sills notched five saves for the win, and Holly Reik took the loss for the visitors with 14 for MU.
