Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- With a 23-10 victory over the visiting Methodist Monarchs, Meredith College lacrosse clinched the USA South Regular Season title for the first time in program history. A two-time tournament champ, MC Lax now adds one more jewel to the crown in just its fourth season. Seniors Katie Burnet and Victoria Doyle were recognized prior to the first draw, and Burnet scored her 200th career goal in the 27th minute of the match.
Sophomore attack Carlee Joseph was the high point-getter in tonight's 60-minute show assisting on five goals and scoring six of her own as Meredith outshot MU 49-18 for the conference win.
The Monarchs remained close through much of the first period, until Meredith's defense closed off the net with just under five minutes left in the half. Burnet launched a 6-0 rally to push the Avenging Angels ahead 15-6 heading into the break.
Joseph connected with Doyle and Holly Hite to open the second stanza extending Meredith's lead to 11. Monarch Sareena Coleman scored on three attempts during the period, but the Angels held the advantage throughout the frame.
Burnet recorded four goals with a single-game career-high eight draw controls adding a pair of groundballs and causing two turnovers, while Doyle tallied six points on five goals and one assist with a pair of draw controls. Hite finished with three goals, three draw controls, and Jordyn King recorded three draw controls, adding one goal on the night.
Katie Sills recorded her 11th win in goal for the Angels with five saves, and MU's Jannelle Gant took the loss for the Monarchs.
Meredith travels to Kentucky this weekend for a non-conference doubleheader at Centre College in Danville. The Angels face off with the host Colonels Friday night at 5:30 p.m. and will pair off with Rhodes at the same venue Saturday afternoon. MC Lax wraps up the USA South schedule April 9 at Ferrum.
