Burnet/Miller Lead Lacrosse in 19-6 Win for Chance at Third Title

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Senior midfielder Katie Burnet and junior Molly Miller led the top-seeded Meredith College lacrosse Angels in a 19-6 victory over fourth-seeded Methodist in Friday morning's first semifinal match of the USA South Conference Tournament. The Avenging Angels will battle against the third-seeded Piedmont Lions, who defeated Greensboro in the second semifinal, for a chance at the program's third consecutive tournament crown.

Miller, Carlee Joseph, and Jennifer Halvorson helped Meredith to a 3-1 lead through the first 18 minutes of play. The Monarchs scored their second goal at 13:27 to pull to within one, but Holly Hite controlled the next draw control allowing Victoria Doyle to advance Meredith's lead.

Julie Capretti scored next and assisted Doyle on another to spread the gap to four, and Joseph and Burnet added two more to help MC Lax pull away to an 8-2 lead with less than eight minutes in the half.

Methodist found the net twice more before the break, but the Angels held a four-point advantage at the intermission.

The Avenging Angels ramped up their attack in the second period scoring five goals through the first 7:22. The Monarchs managed to slip past Meredith's defense on two more occasions, but Miller ripped three more goals to finish off the Monarchs.

Katie Sills notched a pair of saves in her 15th win in goal for the Angels, and MU's Emily Ewin earned the loss with 14 credits on the day.

Burnet finished with six points on five goals, one assist, adding three groundballs, three caused turnovers, and a pair of draw controls. Miller tallied seven points on four goals, three assists, and Joseph finished with three goals. Doyle led all with six draw controls to go along with five points, and Capretti tallied two goals and two assists in the win.

Emily Brennen and Sareena Coleman led the Monarchs with two goals apiece.
