Volleyball Sweeps Covenant and Wesleyan in USA South Play Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team won two during Friday's USA South Play Day to move to 6-0 in the conference and 14-2 overall. Elizabeth Pattison notched a match-high 13 kills to lead the Angels in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) victory over the Scots, and rookie middle Cathy Delano finished with 7-in-8 attempts in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-4) sweep over the Wolves.

In set one versus Covenant, the teams tied the score at 18-18 on the 13th occasion, but a missed Scot serve followed by a stuff from Alex Hafliger and Caroline Corey put the Angels up by two. Hafliger and Karlie Long put down three more winners to give Meredith a 1-0 match advantage.

Set two followed a similar pattern with the teams even at 17, but Long and Haley Reeg scored the next four points to force a Covenant timeout. The teams exchanged the next few points until the Angels dropped two in a row and called for their own break in the action. The strategy worked as Meredith finished off the Scots for a 2-0 lead.

Covenant came out of the break on a mission and held the lead early in the match through a score of 12-7. Hannah Blaylock dished out three assists to Long and Pattison to pull the Angels to within one, and Katie Keen served back-to-back winners to continue Meredith's attack to an eventual three-point lead at 16-13.

The Angels continued to press and finished off the Scots 25-20 for the sweep. Blaylock led all with 32 assists, adding 13 digs, and Keegan Lynch tallied a match-high 18 digs.

The Ferrum College Panthers lost the next match to Covenant before downing USA South newcomer Wesleyan College in straight sets.

In the nightcap Head Coach Fiona Barkley started a mostly rookie lineup led by senior Jessica Goodwin, moving from her usual defensive position to the right side. Lauren Grodi dished out 24 assists, and Emily Skoglund defended the back row. Elisabeth Smith recorded three kills opposite Delano, and junior Tyler Bryan and freshman Sam Smith combined for 11 winners from the outside.

The Avenging Angels host their second USA South Play Day of the season tomorrow afternoon. Maryville and Meredith pair off at 1 p.m. Saturday to open the conference action. Ferrum steps in to play the Scots and Salem College, and the Angels cap off the day with the Salem Spirits at 7 p.m.
