Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team finished off the visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops in four sets with scores of 25-16, 25-13, 15-25, 25-17. Caroline Corey and Hannah Blaylock led the Avenging Angels with a match-high 13 kills and 40 assists, respectively.
Meredith seemed to handle the Bishops with ease through the first set, advancing to a quick seven-point advantage at 11-4. The visitors managed to reclaim two points over the next dozen points, but Blaylock served up three aces during a 6-0 MCVB rally to reduce any threat.
N.C. Wesleyan held on early in the second frame until Haley Reeg and Blaylock connected for a pair of winners en route to a 5-1 series to lift the Avenging Angels to a 10-6 lead. Blaylock landed a kill from Katie Keen, Corey added another, and Lauren Phillips launched back-to-back service aces, as Meredith pushed ahead to 17-9. Reeg and Ally Copenhaver finished off the Bishops down the stretch for a two-set advantage.
With the clear momentum in favor of the Angels, N.C. Wesleyan managed to interrupt the flow with a set three win. MCVB took an early lead, but the Bishops chipped away the Meredith lead to even the score at nines. An attack error from the Angels followed by consecutive service winners from Wesleyan's Haileigh Reisenbeck unsettled the hosts and forced Head Coach Kenzie Aries to call for a timeout.
But NCW scored 8 of the next 10 points to hold off the Avenging Angels. A second Meredith timeout seemed to settle the Angels, but N.C. Wesleyan was too close to the win.
Set four remained close through a 14-13 Bishop advantage, and Meredith tried yet another timeout to change the direction. A Wesleyan ball handling error after a MCVB timeout was just the break Meredith needed, and Abby Lee subbed in for a service ace to keep things going. Reeg landed a pair of blasts in the middle, and Lee launched a second ace during the rally. Reeg and Blaylock stuffed the next Bishop attempt to extend Meredith's lead to five at 19-14.
The rally deflated Wesleyan's attack, and Meredith went on to finish off the Bishops for the win.
Reeg posted 10 kills with three blocks and three service aces, and Cathy Delano added 10 kills of her own. Blaylock added three kills, six digs, and a pair of blocks to her totals, and Phillips and Keep led the Angels with 10 digs apiece.
Wesleyan's Autumn Spence led the Bishops with 11 kills, and Hannah Huls notched a match-high 18 digs.
The Avenging Angels travel to Salem Friday to face off with the Spirits and division leader Averett. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 5 p.m. versus the Cougars.
