Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team capped off the 2017 regular season with a pair of USA South wins Saturday on Senior Day. MCVB opened with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-16) victory over Ferrum and finished off the Methodist Monarchs in five 3-2 (25-13, 18-25, 27-29, 25-21, 15-10) to secure a third seed in the East Division playoffs set to begin on Halloween.
Interim Head Coach Kenzie Aries and her team celebrated fourth-year Angels Katie Keen, Tyler Bryan, Alex Hafliger, and Hannah Blaylock just prior to the opening match. The seniors must now face East #6 Greensboro Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m., and the winner will advance to round two versus host William Peace at 7:30 p.m.
Game 1
Meredith made quick work of the Panthers outhitting the visitors .341 to -.067. Caroline Corey led the effort with a dozen kills, and Hafliger added nine. Rookie Carson Jones tallied eight, and Bryan led all hitting .800 with four kills in five attempts. Blaylock managed the floor with a match-high 32 assists, and Keen grabbed 12 digs.
Game 2
After the Monarchs downed Ferrum 3-1, the Avenging Angels cruised past MU 25-13 in the opening frame of the nightcap. But the momentum shifted toward MU. With an even score at sevens, Methodist scored the next five to take the lead. Haley Reeg knocked down a winner, and Hafliger paired up with Jones for a stuff to interrupt the Monarch rally. But three consecutive Angel missteps drove the momentum back to Methodist, who advanced their lead to 10.
Another Hafliger block launched a 7-2 Meredith rally, but MU finished off the Angels to tie the match. Set three remained close throughout, but Methodist just outlasted the Angels to take a 2-1 match advantage.
In front of a hometown crowd on Senior Day, the Avenging Angels managed to recover. The battle continued into the fourth frame with the score tied on 11 occasions. Both teams put together a series of short rallys to try and gain an advantage. Meredith's final series advanced their lead to five at 24-19, and the Angels finally finished off the Monarchs to force a deciding frame.
The teams peppered back-and-fourth until a 9-2 Angels run secured the win.
Corey led all with 25 kills, 13 digs, and Hafliger finished with 14 kills, seven blocks. Reeg posted 12 kills, and Blaylock notched a match-high 52 assists. Keen tallied 16 digs, and Lauren Phillips recorded 14.
