RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team's tournament run ended early with a 3-0 loss to the William Peace Pacers in Wednesday's USA South quarterfinals. East #3 Meredith kicked off Wednesday night with a 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 26-24, 25-11) victory over East #6 Greensboro in round one to advance.

The top-two seeds of each division advanced to Friday's semifinals set to be played in Danville, Virgina. East top-seed Averett will face West #2 Maryville, and the East #2 Pacers will pair up with West #1 Covenant.

Game 1
The Avenging Angels opened the match strong hitting .421 thanks in part to Caroline Corey's match-high 17 kills. Meredith gained control early on a 10-1 rally to hold a 13-4 advantage. Alex Hafliger landed back-to-back blasts in the next series, as MCVB continued to attack. The Pride managed to keep up with the Angels the rest of the frame, but Meredith earned the eight-point win for a 1-0 match lead.

Set two remained much closer with the score even on 11 occasions through 19-19. The Pride scored the next two points on Meredith missteps and finished the rally with a kill from Evan Sherer.

Haley Reeg tallied three kills in the next four plays, as the Angels edged back in front 23-22. But a Meredith service error led to two more winners from Greensboro to tie the match.

The Pride maintained momentum through the third set and forced the Avenging Angels to a 26-24 win. Meredith managed to finish off Greensboro with ease in the fourth stanza and advanced to the 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal pairing with the host Peace Pacers.

Reeg tallied 13 kills with a match-high eight blocks, and Hannah Blaylock distributed 42 assists with 11 digs. Rookie Carson Jones added eight kills, and Lauren Phillips led a trio of defenders with double-digit digs.

Game 2
The Angels' victory was short lived. Meredith held a 9-8 lead in the first set versus William Peace, but the Pacers quickly assumed control of the match with a 7-1 run. Corey landed a kill to interrupt the series, and a trio of unforced WPU errors kept the Angels in the mix. Hannah Blaylock landed a quick second-ball attack to pull MCVB to within five, Peace finished off the Angels for a match advantage.

Meredith continued to put up a fight but was unable to gain a clear advantage throughout the contest. The Pacers managed to outlast MCVB for the win.

Corey landed seven kills to lead the Angels, and Blaylock tallied 18 assists for a Meredith all-time career record of more than 3800. Phillips tallied 14 digs in the loss.
