Box Score 2 FERRUM, Va. -- Meredith College volleyball earned a pair of USA South wins in Saturday's play day at Ferrum College. In a five-set thriller MCVB claimed a 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13, 15-12) victory over Methodist and capped off the day with a 3-1 (25-14, 13-25, 25-17, 25-16) win over the host Ferrum Panthers to remain in second in the USA South East Division. Caroline Corey and Haley Reeg led the MCVB offense with Hannah Blaylock directing the team.
Game 1
With a two set deficit the Avenging Angels recovered to finish off the Monarchs in five. The teams were even at nine in the third stanza when Meredith finally broke away on a 4-0 rally, including a pair of Reeg kills. But MU responded three of the next four to pull back to within two.
Reeg picked up a Corey error as MCVB scored seven unanswered points to a 21-11 advantage. But the defense sat back on their heels to allow back-to-back Monarch service aces en route to a 9-2 series to edge back again to within two points of the Angels at 23-21.
Rookie Ally Copenhaver landed a kill, and Reeg paired up with Tyler Bryan for a stuff to finish off Methodist with a set victory.
The fourth frame opened with a Monarch streak to give MU an 8-6 lead, but Cathy Delano landed a kill from the middle to launch another MCVB rally. Seven consecutive points forced a Methodist timeout. The Monarchs would score just five more points, as the Meredith cruised to an eight-point victory to tie the match 2-2.
The streaks continued in the fifth frame opening with a 6-1 MU rally. Meredith responded scoring 9 of the next 11 points with help from three kills from rookie Carson Jones to edge into the lead 10-8.
Corey blasted a pair of kills from Blaylock, but MU continued to pressure tying the set at 12s. Corey scored the next point from the outside, and MU handed the match to MCVB with back-to-back errors.
Corey led with a match-high 21 kills, and Reeg led all hitting .353 with seven kills in 17 attempts. Blaylock dished out a match-high 47 assists, and Katie Keen posted 19 digs. Rookie Abby Lee tallied 13 digs, and Jones finished with 10 kills.
Game 2
Meredith held on to the momentum in the nightcap with a set-one victory over the Panthers. A series of missteps allowed Ferrum back into the match with a win in the second stanza, but MCVB settled in to finish off the hosts with back-to-back wins for the sweep.
Corey led the Angels with 20 kills, and Reeg added 11 with three more blocks. Blaylock distributed 44 assists, and Samantha Smith tallied 15 digs.
The Avenging Angels travel to Pfeiffer Wednesday for a 7 p.m. midweek pairing and cap off the week back in Misenheimer with another USA South play day.
