Lacrosse Angels Edge Roanoke 11-10 in OT

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College lacrosse Angels edged the visiting Roanoke Maroons in a thrilling 11-10 win in overtime. Sophomore standout Holly Hite led MCLax with four goals in seven attempts and five draw controls.

The Avenging Angels' offense led the fight with 22 shots, including 17 on goal, compared to 18 from the Maroons. But turnovers, draw controls, and fouls remained fairly even, and both teams earned a penalty late in the second half.

Meredith trailed 3-0 early in the game, but Molly Miller opened up scoring for the Angels with a goal during the 23rd minute with an assist from Hite. The Angels scored three more goals to take a 4-3 lead at 12:27. The team's exchanged points during the final minutes of the half to leave Meredith with a one-point advantage heading into the break.

Meredith's Alyssa Codispoti collected the opening draw in the second stanza, but a quick Angel turnover gave the ball back to Roanoke. A Hite foul put the Maroons leading scorer Courtney McCartin on the eight meter line for a free position goal to tie the match at six.

Carlee Joseph and Miller connected on a score after a Roanoke turnover to put MCLax back in front, and Hite scored a solo goal 90 seconds later to continue the attack.

Roanoke would score four of the next five goals to hold a 10-9 advantage with 4:37 remaining in regulation. Meredith gathered the next draw control, and Head Coach Lauren Scott called for a timeout. The strategy worked as Miller dished out another assist to Hite on the next play to even the score with just under four minutes remaining.

Ronaoke's next attempt fell wide of the box, and the Maroon's keeper Emma Blair recorded three stops down the stretch to push the match into extra minutes.

Meredith's first attempt in overtime fell wide, and Roanoke drove down field for an attempt that hit the post. The Maroons recovered the deflection, but Hite intercepted a pass to move the ball back to the other end of the field.

A late Roanoke foul put Julie Capretti on the line for a free position attempt that flew wide, but Miller fed Joseph once more inside for the sudden-victory in Meredith's favor with just seconds left on the clock.

Miller dished out a game-high four assists, scoring two of her own, and Joseph netted two with one assist. Capretti scored two goals in two shots on goal, and Jennifer Halvorson found the net once with one assist. A. Codispoti notched three groundballs with two draw controls and as many caused turnovers, and Sarah Arbes collected a trio of draw controls.

Meredith's Haley Whitfield recorded three saves in her second career victory, and Maroon keeper Blair tallied six saves in the team's first loss.

The Angels kickoff a three-game spring break series March 6 at Sewanee. The opening draw is set for 5:00 p.m. Follow the live action HERE.
