Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Carlee Joseph and Holly Hite led the Meredith College lacrosse Angels with four goals apiece in a 11-10 victory over the host Lynchburg Hornets to close out the regular season with 17 consecutive wins.
The Avenging Angels must now await the NCAA Tournament selection committee's announcement slated for May 7. With a No. 2 NCAA Division III Mid-South regional ranking, Meredith hopes for a strong bid next month.
Meredith's Haley Whitfield notched eight stops for the Angels in tonight's complete match in goal, and Chelsea Shultis recorded four saves for the Hornets.
After a quick score from Julie Capretti assisted by Hite, Joseph forced a Hornet turnover and Hite finished off the play with a goal assisted by Molly Miller. Both teams scored quick goals leaving the Angels with a 3-1 advantage with less than four minutes off the clock.
In spite of a trio of Meredith draw controls over the next seven minutes, Lynchburg netted three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 lead.
But Hite and Jennifer Halvorson teamed up for back-to-back goals in the last eight minutes of the half with Hite netting one more solo goal at 1:22 to give the Avenging Angels a 6-4 advantage. Halvorson forced a Hornet turnover in the final minute, and Hite dished off a last second pass to Joseph to extend that advantage to three with seconds left on the clock.
The Hornets responded with a quick attack in the first 24 seconds of the second stanza, but the Avenging Angels netted two more goals to maintain a four-point lead.
A Meredith penalty opened the door for a Lynchburg free position goal. The Hornets scored two more points to pull to within one before Cameron Ruffin forced a critical turnover on the host's Alicia Sandoval.
But the Avenging Angels blew an opportunity with their own misstep to give the ball back to the Hornets with 8:46 remaining. The turnover led to a Lynchburg goal to tie the match 9-9 with seven minutes left in regulation.
Tess Minnich picked up the next draw control, and Capretti netted a free position attempt to put the lead back in favor of Meredith.
Turnovers from both teams left Lynchburg in control, and Laura Meisner evened the score once again with an assist from Maddie Koontz with 3:16 left.
Joseph controlled the next draw, and the Avenging Angels held out for a game winning goal from Joseph with seconds left on the clock. Miller assisted on the play.
