Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Alex Hafliger led the Meredith College volleyball team with 14 kills, eight blocks in a split in day two of the Captain's Classic. The Avenging Angels claimed a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-15) victory over the Neumann Knights before host Christopher Newport finished off the day downing Meredith in three (25-19, 25-13, 25-18).
MCVB recovered from yesterday's five-set loss to NU with a balanced attack distributed by veteran setter Hannah Blaylock. Ten Angels recorded at least one kill with five notching at least five winners in the match. Caroline Corey matched Hafliger with seven, and Samantha Smith led with a .667 hitting percentage on two kills in three attempts. Smith led with 18 digs, and rookie Lauren Phillips grabbed 14. Cathy Delano hit .500 on the day with six kills and just one error to go along with a trio of kills.
Versus CNU rookie Ally Copenhaver stepped up with seven kills, and Haley Reeg added a pair of winners to her seven total on the day. Blaylock dished out 22 assists with four digs, and Katie Keen collected a dozen digs in the loss.
The Avenging Angels travel to Lexington, Virginia, next weekend for the Washington & Lee Invitational before hosting St. Andrews September 12 in the home opener.
