Volleyball Wins Two to Open USA South Schedule

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the season's first USA South Volleyball Play Day, the Meredith College Angels eased past Mary Baldwin 3-0 (25-8, 25-6, 25-6) and held on for a 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 16-25, 15-11) victory over the Greensboro Pride to close out the day.

Pfeiffer lost 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-21) and used four sets to finish off the Fighting Squirrels 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15) in the other two matches held in Meredith's Weatherspoon Gymnasium.

Game 1
Cathy Delano tossed nine consecutive serves, including three aces, to ease Meredith to a 10-1 advantage early in the first set. MBU finally ended the run and rallied with the Angels for several points before MCVB regained full control of the match with help from back-to-back kills from Tyler Bryan and a pair of service aces from Lauren Phillips. Senior setter Hannah Blaylock landed a pair of attacks down the stretch to secure the win for a 1-0 lead.

Meredith continued to pressure the Squirrels with a quick 4-0 lead in the second before Baldwin evened the score with help from three MCVB missteps. The Angels recovered and cruised to a 2-0 match lead scoring 21 of the next 23 points.

Freshman Kristen Leavel served 18 consecutive balls to help the Angels finish off MBU for good in the third set.

Bryan led the match with 10 kills, and Delano posted five. Lauren Grodi distributed a match-high 15 assists with Blaylock dishing out 10. Phillips and Sam Smith combined for 13 of Meredith's 24 digs on the match.

Game 2
In the fourth and final match of the day with Meredith leading 2-0, Greensboro forced a five-setter to finish off the day. With the Angels in the lead 23-22 in the third set and poised for a sweep, GC blocked Caroline Corey to even the score. Back-to-back MCVB missteps kept the match alive for the Pride.

With the score even on seven occasions through the first 18 points of the fourth frame, Greensboro finally began to pull away to push the match to five.

Meredith jumped out with the early momentum to claim an 8-2 advantage, but GC chipped away at that lead to tie the match at 10s. Corey and Hannah Blaylock put together a winner to end the rally, and a Pride ball handling error spread the gap to two. Haley Reeg picked up a teammate's service error with back-to-back winners from the middle that led to a win for the Angels.

Seven Avenging Angels, including Blaylock and Reeg, finished with five kills apiece, and Blaylock dished out 42 assists in the win.

MCVB travels to N.C. Wesleyan Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. league pairing with the Battling Bishops. Follow the live action HERE.
