Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Meredith College volleyball team dropped both matches in five sets Friday evening in day-one of Washington & Lee's invitational. Maryville shut down a two-set Angels lead to claim a 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 11-15) victory, and Southern Virginia outlasted MCVB for a 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 18-25, 25-22, 8-15) win. Caroline Corey led Meredith's offense with 28 kills on the night, and Katie Keen posted 50 digs.
Game 1
The Avenging Angels opened the day hitting .371 to remain steadily ahead of the Scots in the first set. Maryville responded early in the second to hold off Meredith until 5-0 rally with Tyler Bryan at the service line edged MCVB back in front 11-8, and the Angels managed to hold off the threat for a two-set lead.
Maryville interrupted the momentum jumping out to a 16-2 lead quickly in the third and held on for a set win. Another quick start in the fourth gave the Scots a 7-2 lead, but the Avenging Angels recovered scoring seven consecutive points to edge back in front. Meredith held on until a series of four errors opened the door once more for Maryville, who would maintain control the rest of the way.
Down by six in the deciding set, Meredith recovered to even the score at 11, but three attack blunders handed Maryville the win.
Game 2
With the Knights holding a 21-17 lead in the opening set of game two, Hannah Blaylock led the Angels on an 8-1 rally to win 25-22. SVU unleashed their attack to tie the match on .355 hitting in the second and carried the momentum to a match advantage with a set three victory.
The tenacious Angels refused to fold and went back-and-forth with Southern Virginia to force a fifth set. But Meredith would not recover from an early 7-1 start for the Knights to finish off the day with a loss.
Alex Hafliger joined Corey with double-digit kills versus Maryville for a combined 13 on the day, adding five blocks. Blaylock boasted 46 assists versus the Scots and 38 in the second, and Haley Reeg tallied 11 kills, four blocks on the day.
The Avenging Angels open with Eastern University Saturday at 1 p.m. and follow with the hosts at 3:30. The Generals will provide live stats for both matches.
