Volleyball Angels Down Pacers 3-0 to Remain Undefeated in USA South East

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In front of a packed house, the Meredith College volleyball squad downed USA South rival William Peace 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-19) Tuesday evening. Caroline Corey's double-double performance with 13 kills, 11 digs led MCVB to the win.

Tonight's conference match played up to expectations as both teams entered the gym undefeated in league play. The Angels started out strong leading 8-3, but William Peace countered with a 6-1 rally to event the set at nines. Ally Copenhaver ended the run with a kill at the fingers of Avery Bowman, and Bowman dumped a second touch to maintain the pressure. Lauren Phillips entered the match to serve an ace, as MCVB edged back into the lead by two.

Another Pacer series pushed the visitors into the lead 18-14 before Haley Reeg interrupted the attack from the middle. Reeg landed another kill, and WPU gave up three unanswered points to edge the Angels back in front 20-19. Peace scored five of the next six points, including a pair of kills from Madison Myers, to hold Meredith at set-point.

Bowman dished out back-to-back assists to Copenhaver and Corey to force WPU to call for a timeout. But Phillips did not miss a beat from the service line, and Bowman directed the offense to a 26-24 finish for the match lead.

Both scored in streaks during second set as well with the score tied on seven occasions early in the frame. With Phillips back at the service line and MCVB holding a two-point advantage, the Angels began a steady climb to 21-16. The Pacers caught Meredith off-guard scoring three of the next points on service winners, but the Angels held on to finish off the set for a 2-0 lead.

Set three remained close until MCVB started to pull away on back-to-back missteps from the Pacers at 15-12. Copenhaver landed a pair of winners, and Elisabeth Smith and Cathy Delano stuffed McLendyn Weathersby. A second error led the Pacers to a timeout trailing by seven. Corey punctuated the win on a blast from the outside for the sweep.

Emily Skoglund led all with 17 digs, and Delano finished with four blocks. Lauren Grodi led the Angels with 15 assists, followed by 12 from Bowman to go along with three kills.

Sarah Scott led the Pacers with a match-high 17 assists in the loss.

The Avenging Angels kick off Fall Break at home Thursday for a 7 p.m. match versus Salem College.
