Meredith Volleyball Set to Host Tournament Championship

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The East Division top-seed Meredith College volleyball Avenging Angels captured a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16) victory in Tuesday night's USA South quarterfinal pairing with fifth-seed Methodist. As the highest remaining seed, MCVB earned the privilege to host conference tournament semifinal and Championship matches this weekend.

The West's fourth-seed Piedmont Lions upset West one-seed Covenant to advance and will face off with East second-seed William Peace at 4 p.m. Friday. At 6:30 p.m. the Avenging Angels will pair with the West's third-seed Maryville Scots, who knocked off second-seed Huntingdon for a spot in the semis. The winners advance to Saturday afternoon's 3 p.m. Championship.

Meredith earned a share of the East Division Regular Season title this year and will look to add the program's second tournament championship this weekend.

Quarterfinal
The Monarchs downed fourth-seed Salem in tonight's first match in order to battle with MCVB. The Angels came out fighting tonight and put MU away without much issue in the opening frame.

Methodist responded in the second with an early lead, but a Samantha Smith service ace led to a kill from Caroline Corey to even the set 9-9. Avery Bowman dished out back-to-back assists before MU piled on four consecutive points to retake the lead 14-11.

Corey posted two winners and Meredith continued to battle for an edge. Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley called for a timeout at 23-23, and Corey and Haley Reeg finished out the set for a 2-0 match advantage.

The Monarchs lost their fight in the final frame, as Meredith cruised to a 19-8 lead. MU scored 8 of the next 10 points to cut their deficit to five. But a trio of misfires along with a blast from Ally Copenhaver and steady serving from Emily Skoglund helped put away the Monarchs for the win.

Corey posted a double-double with 10 kills, 15 digs, and Cathy Delano tallied six kills with a pair of blocks. Haley Reed finished with five blocks, four kills, and Lauren Phillips led all with 18 digs.

Admission will be charged to enter all USA South Tournament games (general adult admission $6, faculty/staff/student/child/senior admission $3).
