Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- In Saturday's season opener the Meredith College lacrosse Angels did not miss a beat in a 19-0 shutout over fellow USA South member Huntingdon College. Carlee Joseph led the efforts with seven points on the day.
With the goalie serving a five-minute suspension due to breaking a team rule, Meredith's defense stepped in to protect the goal. But the Avenging Angels offense quickly placed Meredith out front as Holly Hite and Joseph scored back-to-back goals in the early seconds of play.
Rookie Hanna Anderson controlled the next two draws for the Angels, and Meredith continued to attack. Joseph dished out an assist to Peatross at 29:06. Joseph and Julie Capretti continued the pressure with two more Meredith goals to extend the Angels' lead to five less than three minutes into the game.
Huntingdon picked up the next draw, but Peatross interrupted the Hawks effort to send the action in the other direction. Capretti scored on a free position attempt, and Hite controlled the next draw to continue the pressure on the hosts.
Sydney Hardee entered as goalie at 24:29, and the Meredith Avenging Angels remained in control of the game throughout the first period with a 15-0 advantage heading into the break.
Meredith's scoring efforts spread out throughout the team with 10 Angels on the board. Joseph and Capretti led with four goals apiece in the first half, and Anderson recorded a match-high seven draw controls with a pair of goals and assists. Hite and Olivia Higgs netted two apiece with two draw controls for Hite and a pair of assists for Higgs. Sarah Arbes tallied three draw controls for the Angels, and defender Cameron Ruffin notched a pair of caused turnovers alongside Peatross.
