Volleyball Angels Cruise Past Averett 3-0

Box Score

AVERETT, Va. -- After an unexpected break due to hurricane Florence, Meredith College volleyball put away rival Averett University in straight sets (25-11, 25-14, 25-19) to open the USA South schedule Wednesday evening. Ally Copenhaver led the offensive production for the Angels landing eight kills on the night.

Tonight's victory snapped AU's 41-match win streak in conference regular season games.

The Avenging Angels controlled the match hitting .263 and forcing the Cougars to a negative percentage with help from 14 blocks. Meredith struggled at the service line recording just one service ace with nine errors, but Emily Skoglund and Caroline Corey collected 10 digs apiece to preserve the back line.

Haley Reeg and Avery Bowman stuffed AU for the second point of the match, and Reeg put away two more from the middle to send Meredith on a 6-1 rally to open set one. Lauren Grodi dished out back-to-back assists to Elisabeth Smith and Copenhaver, and Meredith went on to put away Averett with ease.

Lauren Phillips served up seven consecutive points to kickoff set two, and Cathy Delano returned the serve to MCVB with a kill from the hands of Bowman. AU struggled to connect, and the Avenging Angels finished off the frame on a pair of winners from Copenhaver.

The Cougars kept the final set close, trailing by just one at 19-18 after a 7-1 rally. But Elisabeth Smith interrupted the series with a kill, and Bowman stuffed Sarah Shropshire on the next ball. Delano led a 4-0 run to finish off the hosts for a 1-0 USA South record.

Delano recorded six kills with Reeg and E. Smith finishing with five apiece. Samantha Smith tallied three to go along with as many digs, and Corey added two kills with two assists. Bowman and Grodi dished out 13 assists apiece.

MCVB returns home for a USA South play day Saturday and will open with Pfeiffer at Noon. The Greensboro Pride face off with the Falcons next, and Meredith will close the day with GC. All three matches will be available via live stats and video with play-by-play from Dennis Cox.
