Volleyball Picks Up Two USA South Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Meredith College volleyball team recorded a pair of wins at Saturday's USA South play day with Methodist (16-25, 25-14, 27-25, 28-26) and Mary Baldwin (25-11, 25-15, 25-19). Caroline Corey led the Avenging Angels with a pair of double-doubles on the day.

Game 1
Methodist opened with a decisive set-one lead, but MCVB recovered with a .382 hitting percentage to tie the match. Ally Copenhaver and Haley Reeg landed a pair of kills, and Corey served up two winners to launch a 9-0 rally en route to the second set win.

The Avenging Angels remained in control of the third set until MU evened the score at 13s on a kill from Jamie Jones. MCVB edged ahead again by three, but the Monarchs managed to take the lead at 25-24. Elisabeth Smith scored back-to-back points on a kill from the right and a serve ace, and Corey finished off the win from the opposite corner.

MU controlled the fourth set until Lauren Grodi found Corey for a blast to even the frame at 18s, and Elisabeth Smith landed another kill to put the Angels in front. The teams tied the match on seven more occasions, but MCVB finally put together back-to-back winners to finish off the win.

Game 2
The Avenging Angels made quick work of the first set versus the host Baldwin Fighting Squirrels and maintained the advantage through much of the second. MBU rallied late in the second with a 5-0 rally to pull to within four at 19-15, but Emily Skoglund served out the match in favor of MCVB.

Baldwin continued to attack early in the third, holding a 6-5 advantage. But Meredith interrupted the effort with a five-point run of their own to retake the match lead. Mary Baldwin evened the score at 18s, but Bailey Lucas served out the match for the sweep.

Corey finished with 32 kills and 31 digs, and Copenhaver posted 12 kills, five digs. Skoglund grabbed 36 digs, and Lauren Phillips finished with 21. Setters Lauren Grodi and Avery Bowman combined for 72 assists on the day.

Meredith hosts rival William Peace Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., with both teams undefeated in league play.
