Volleyball Sweeps Wasps; Comeback Falls Short Vs. Quakers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team split in today's action at this weekend's Brevard Tournament. A 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-11) sweep over the Emory & Henry Wasps was followed by a 3-2 loss to Guilford (22-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 11-15).

Game 1
Set one remained close much of the way with the teams even at 19-19 down the stretch. A 4-0 MCVB rally gave the Angels some room, and Avery Bowman dished out an assist to Caroline Corey to finish off the win.

Lauren Phillips served Meredith to a 4-2 early lead in the second frame, and the Avenging Angels spread the gap to five on a block from Bowman and Ally Copenhaver for a 12-7 lead. The teams traded points through the rest of the set leaving Meredith out front for a 2-0 match advantage.

The Wasps shifted the momentum early in the third with a 4-1 lead, but MCVB's Samantha Smith interrupted the rally with a kill. Two more points evened the match at fours, and the set remained close through the next series of play.

Elisabeth Smith landed a winner on an assist from Lauren Grodi, and the Avenging Angels ran away on an 8-1 rally to hold a 15-10 lead. Meredith continued to attack Emory & Henry and finished off the match with 10 consecutive points for the sweep.

Game 2
In the final match of the day, the Quakers took an early 2-0 match lead over MCVB. But the Avenging Angels battled back with a pair of clear wins in the third and fourth frames to send the game to a deciding set.

A series of missteps early in the frame offered Guilford a 5-2 lead, but Meredith battled back to an 11-10 advantage on a Corey kill. But Quaker McKinley Durham served out the match with back-to-back service aces for the win.

Corey led the Angels with 29 kills, 12 digs on the day, and Bowman dished out 48 assists. E. Smith posted 19 digs, seven kills, and Emily Skoglund tallied 26 digs. S. Smith notched 22 digs, 12 kills, and Cathy Delano recorded 17 kills, seven blocks.

MCVB remains on the road for their next two matches, including a midweek conference opener versus rival Averett University September 19.
