Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- History was made at the Meredith Athletic Complex on Thursday night as the Meredith field hockey program captured the first win in program history via a 1-0 count against Southern Virginia.
The Avenging Angels snapped their eight game losing streak to start the NCAA era for the program and defeated the only other USA South institution that sponsors the sport. As it stands, Meredith is still the only NCAA Division III school in North Carolina to sponsor field hockey.
The contest also saw the program's first goal. Hannah Taib knocked home a lose ball near the cage to etch her name in the program record book forever as the first goal scorer. The score came midway through the third quarter and Meredith was able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Southern Virginia outshot Meredth 17-8 and each side recorded eight penalty corners.
Shae-Lynn Henderson eclipsed 200 saves for the season and stopped all 10 shots that were on target in her first career shutout. She leads all divisions of the NCAA with over 23 saves per game.
The Avenging Angels return to action on Sunday, Oct. 24, as they travel to Sweet Briar for a 1 pm start.
