Meredith Downed by William Peace in Five Sets, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team won each of the first two sets, but a rallying William Peace team came back for a 3-2 victory in Weatherspoon Gym on Tuesday night. 

The Avenging Angels move to 10-6 on the year, while holding a 4-2 mark in USA South contests. Meanwhile, the Pacers improve to 10-9 overall behind a 5-1 conference record.

Meredith jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match after picking up 25-15 and 25-16 set wins in the first two games. William Peace rallied back for a 27-25 tally in the third set and earned 25-22 and 15-8 wins to clinch the match. 

A trio of Avenging Angels reached double digits in kills including Avery Bowman who finished with a team-high 15 kills, team-best 31 assists and 10 digs for her second triple-double in the last three matches. She also recorded three total blocks. Whitney Bolton contributed 13 kills, while Hailey Long put down 10 kills. Bailey Lucas also pitched in 24 assists and seven digs in the loss.

Defensively, Lauren Phillips led the team with 13 digs with Hannah Jo Jablonski tallying 11 digs. The Avenging Angels combinded for over 20 block assists as a team, including seven total blocks from Long and six total blocks from Sara Dees. Dees also recorded nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage and pitched in five digs. Lauren Bissette recorded five total blocks as well to go with her eight kills and hit at a .412 clip on the night.

For the Pacers, Shelby Cooper led the way with a game-best 16 kills, while Kelsey Beirbauer and Hannah Collier each registered 15 kills. Reigning USA South Player of the Week Mackenzie Russell led the game with 46 assists to go with 10 digs for an assist/dig double-double. Logan Moore paced the visitors with 16 digs, while Collier added 12 digs to her night's stat line.

The Avenging Angels are back in actin on Friday, Oct. 8, for a USA South Tri-Match featuring contests against Averett and N.C. Wesleyan. The action is set to begin at Weatherspoon Gym beginning at 12 pm.
