Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College earned a big win Wednesday afternoon with a 16-14 victory over the visiting Roanoke Maroons, ranked 24th nationally in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. Maya Flake led all with eight points, and Lilia Cruz tied the game-high with six goals.
Trailing by one with 18:32 left in the match, Flake earned a free position attempt and evened the score at 11-11. Meredith Sinkler forced a turnover on the next play, and Arrianna May gathered the loose ball. Flake found Cruz in the crease for another point that would be the game winner.
May controlled the next draw and scored on a free position shot a minute later to extend the lead to two. Joy Deitrich stopped two Maroon attempts after the next draw, but a turnover gave the ball back to the visitors. Leading Roanoke scorer Lilly Blair scored her 17th season goal on the play.
Jess Dowdy controlled the next draw in favor of the Angels, and May found Flake inside for another goal to keep the Maroons at a distance. Another Deitrich save gave the Avenging Angels another chance at the net, and this time Olivia Blake found Flake for the point to extend Meredith's advantage to three with 5:19 left in regulation.
Another defensive play by Roanoke led to a quick goal, but MC Lax continued to push. May found herself in the penalty box just after the next draw, but Deitrich stepped in for another stop for the Angels. Blair sailed a free position attempt wide, and Meredith earned the possession. Meredith completed the successful clear and called a timeout to plan their next play.
Blake scored after the break with just over two minutes remaining. Roanoke managed to find the net once more and called for a timeout with less than one minute on the clock. The Maroons controlled the draw, but Deitrich picked up her 14th save to give the Angels control of the ball as time ran out.
May tallied six points on three goals and three assists, to go along with four draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Blake finished with two goals, two assists, and Tori Witmer picked up her two goals early in the match. Cruz collected six draw controls to lead the Angels with two ground balls, and Ali Schuh notched three caused turnovers with one ground ball.
Blair led the Maroons with six goals, and Emerson Foster topped all with 11 draw controls.
Deitrich earned her fourth win in goal for the Avenging Angels, registering 14 stops. Carly Schoudel posted her first loss for the Roanoke, recording six saves for the Maroons.
