Box Score FERRUM, Va. -- The Meredith College field hockey team ushered in a new era for the department as it began its first season as the 10th intercollegiate program in the department on Sunday afternoon.
The Avenging Angels fell to Ferrum 8-0 at WB Adams Stadium.
"It was a really exciting day for the program and we have a lot to celebrate the first game in our NCAA history," said head coach Courtney Hexter. "I'm proud of the progress the team has made in the last year and half, and I'm very proud of the athletes who played with a lot of poise today."
In the program's first ever contest at the NCAA level, Meredith held the Panthers to one goal in the first quarter and another in the second to trail 2-0 going into the halftime break. The Panthers scored twice in the third and added on four in the final period.
The Avenging Angels earned a trio of penalty corners in the third quarter that led to three shots -- each from Emilee Wolfe.
Shae-Lynn Henderson recorded 15 saves in all 60 minutes as the goalkeeper.
The Avenging Angels return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Bridgewater beginning at 5 pm.
