Box Score Danville, VA - Meredith College lacrosse returned to USA South Conference play on Wednesday evening with a 22-8 win against Averett University. Kyle Phillips led the way for the Angels, scoring six goals while collecting nine ground balls.
Elizabeth Peasley opened up the scoring in the game for the Cougars as Averett took a 1-0 lead at 12:05 in the first quarter. Kylie Phillips answered back quickly for Meredith scoring her 13th goal of the season at 11:55, assisted by Lauryn Turner. Maya Flake followed with a goal at 11:42. Averett's Faith Bowlin scored her first of four goals in the game to tie it at two goals each. Bowlin would score again a few minutes later in the first period, to give Averett a 3-2 lead, the last lead they would hold in the game. Goals by Phillps, Flake, Tori Witmer, and Olivia Verlinden gave Meredith a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Meredith added to their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 8-2 to take a commanding 18-6 lead into the half. During the second half, Meredith controlled the pace of play while adding four more goals.
Meredith was able to control possession throughout the game, controlling the draw 20-14. Eight Avenging Angels registered points in the game as Phillips led with six. Verlinden added five points on four goals and one assist.
Sophomore goalies Madeline Horrell and Mackenzie Bianchi split time in the cage for the win, totalling five saves.
Meredith lacrosse returns to action with a doubleheader this Saturday 3/26. The Angels will face off against Lynchburg College in a non-conference match-up at 12:00 pm, before taking on USA South Conference opponent Pfeiffer University at 4:00 pm.
