Box Score Buena Vista, Va. - The Meredith lacrosse program outlasted Southern Virginia University 11-10 Friday night inside Knight Stadium in a USA South all-time classic.
Meredith (8-3, 4-0 USA South) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter off goals from junior Jessica Dowdy and sophomore Lauryn Turner. Both finished the game with two goals while Turner added a game-high six draw controls and Dowdy added two assists.
Southern Virginia (5-4, 3-1 USA South) responded in the second quarter outscoring the Avenging Angels 6-4 as the teams headed to the half all square at 6-6.
The intensity was turned up a notch in the second half. Sophomore Sophie LeClaire scored a Man-Up goal off a Dowdy assist but the Knights responded within the minute to tie the game back up.
Southern Virginia took the first lead of the fourth quarter before Meredith answered with three straight goals in four minutes. Senior Tori Witmer scored one of those goals along with Dowdy. The middle of the three goals came from the Southern Virginia goalie mishandling a ground ball after a free position attempt from freshman Reese Walker.
Walker scored three goals and added two assists. Freshman Brooke Blades also scored for the Angels.
Meredith led 10-8 with 6:52 left to play. The Knights scored at the five-minute mark and then tied the game up with 2:49 remaining.
Turner won the following draw control and head coach Lauren Scott called timeout. The Angels milked the shot clock down and scored with 1:12 to go as Turner found the back of the net off a nifty Walker assist. Dowdy won the following draw control to close out the Knights.
Junior Madeline Horrell tied a career-high with 13 saves in goal for the Angels while seniors Meredith Sinkler and Izzy Steele both had two caused turnovers each.
Meredith is back in action at North Carolina Wesleyan College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
