Virginia Beach, VA – November 17, 2024 – The Meredith College Avenging Angels had an eventful weekend at the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, VA. The team earned a 66-59 victory over host Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday before falling 40-54 to the University of Mary Washington in Sunday's matchup.
Saturday, November 16 – Meredith 66, Virginia Wesleyan 59
Meredith College came out firing in the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament, securing a thrilling 66-59 win over host Virginia Wesleyan in a game that was tightly contested through the first two quarters. The game was back-and-forth in the opening half, with both teams exchanging leads and battling for momentum. However, the Avenging Angels came out of halftime with renewed intensity, outscoring the Marlins 23-13 in the third quarter to build a lead they would not relinquish.
A standout performance from senior forward Rylie Wade helped carry Meredith to victory. Wade had an exceptional game, posting career-high numbers in both scoring and rebounds. Wade scored 19 points and pulled down 19 rebounds, showcasing her dominance on both ends of the floor. Her efforts were pivotal in the decisive third quarter surge, as the Avenging Angels controlled the glass and limited Virginia Wesleyan's second-chance opportunities.
Sunday, November 17 – Meredith 40, University of Mary Washington 54
The Avenging Angels faced a tough challenge on Sunday against the University of Mary Washington. Despite a strong fight in the fourth quarter, Meredith fell 40-54 in a game that was neck-and-neck early on. Meredith kept it close in the first quarter, but the team struggled offensively in the second and third periods, allowing Mary Washington to build a sizable lead.
Pam Mock led the offense for the Avenging Angels with 11 points and 4 rebounds, providing a much-needed spark. Meredith showed grit in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 18-9, but the comeback effort ultimately fell short.
