Box Score BUENA VISTA, VA – The Meredith College Avenging Angels fell to the Southern Virginia University Knights 36-68 in their first USA South Conference game of the season, held on the road at Southern Virginia on Saturday.
The game opened with a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find the basket. Meredith led at the end of the first quarter 11-9, capitalizing on strong defense to edge out the Knights. However, the tide began to turn in the second quarter. The teams went into halftime with just a 4 point margin, the Knights had a narrow 28-24 lead.
In the second half, the Knights came out strong on defense, limiting Meredith to just 12 points in the final two quarters. Southern Virginia's defensive intensity, combined with efficient offense, proved to be more than the Avenging Angels could overcome.
Danae Hawkins led the Angels' offense with 12 points, while Pam Mock contributed 8 points. On the defensive end, Rylie Wade was a standout, hauling in a team-high 14 rebounds and adding 7 points to the stat sheet. Despite their efforts, Meredith struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities in the second half, ultimately falling to the Knights.
The Avenging Angels will look to bounce back in their next matchup, when they return home to face Warren Wilson College on Saturday, November 30th, at 2:00 p.m. at Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
