WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. | Danae Hawkin's career day propelled Meredith to the 64-55 victory over Salem College on Tuesday afternoon. Hawkins scored a career-high 23 points on 8-14 from the floor, six made threes, and a free throw.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Pam Mock and
Rylie Wade contributed most of the Angel's offense through the first 10 minutes. Mock drained a jumper to put Meredith on the scoreboard. Later in the quarter Wade made a great cut to the basket, grabbed a rebound, and went back up with it through contact for the successful "And One". In the last four minutes of the quarter both teams drew fouls in the paint. Meredith made four of their five free throws while Salem converted all four to take the 13-12 advantage into the second quarter.
Danae Hawkins knocked down a three from the elbow, Meredith's first of the game to bring the Angels within two, 17-15. Salem's Jade Ware responded with a steal and rolled in the layup on the other end to put the Spirits up 19-15.
Paris Bethea sunk a jumper and Hawkins' second three of the game gave Meredith their first lead 25-24 with 2:38 left in the second quarter. The Spirits took a one-point lead, 26-25 into the locker room thanks to two late free throws from Ware. Salem made 7-8 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes.
Meredith scored 39 points in the final two quarters to secure the victory. In the third, Mock orchestrated a great give and go and finished the layup to cut into the Spirits lead 27-28. Later in the quarter, she made great plays on both ends of the floor. Mock drew a charge on the defensive end, then went down the court, found space, and drew a foul on her jumper. She cashed in the following free throws to make it 36-35 with 3:33 left. Hawkins' two three-pointers gave the Angels a 41-36 lead entering the final frame.
Hawkins picked up right where she left off in the third and nailed a jumper. Ware responded for Salem. She created a turnover and converted the layup to bring the Spirits within four, 47-43 with six minutes left. Hawkins buried another jumper and a late layup from
Kylie Wade extended the Angels lead to 10, 58-48. Bethea and Hawkins put the exclamation point on the win, with back-to-back threes in the final minutes.
