WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The Avenging Angel softball program opened up USA South play with a sweep over Salem College Friday afternoon on Blixt Field. Meredith took game one in five innings 10-0 before taking game two 8-6.
Graduate senior
Hannah Weigle earned the five-inning shutout win in the circle posting a career-high nine strikeouts only allowing one hit.Â
The offense was led by senior
Sarah Manis who posted a career-high six RBIs on three hits which included a bases-clearing grand slam in the second inning.Â
Senior
Savannah Talley posted three hits while sophomore
Mariah Bell and junior
Rheanne Burden also added two-hit games.Â
The 8-6 win in game two was a bit more competitive as the Salem offense came alive. Sophomore
Lillie Davis, who had a solo home run in game one, earned the win in the circle with five strikeouts while Weigle came in to shut the door with the save.Â
Bell tallied three hits with two RBIs while Manis continued her impressive day adding two hits and two RBIs.Â
Sophomore
Emilee Lewis earned two hits and two RBIs, while junior
Jessie Woller added a pair of hits with an RBI. Lewis and Woller both stole two bases while senior
Mia Staggs tied the school record for stolen bases in a career with 54. Staggs also had two hits with an RBI.
The Angels travel to cross-town rival William Peace University on April 3rd for a USA South double-header with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.Â
