RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Sweet Briar College Tuesday afternoon. The Angels fell 5-2 in game one before taking game two 9-2.
Offense came at a premium in game one for the Angels (5-3) as they only tallied two hits coming from sophomore
Emilee Lewis. The Vixens (4-4) scored three in the third and two in the fifth to win.
The Meredith offense woke up in game two racking up 12 hits on their way to a 9-2 win. Sweet Briar scored two runs in the first inning which proved to be the only time sophomore
Lillie Davis would allow scores. Davis earned seven strikeouts on her way to another complete game victory, adding an RBI at the plate.
The scoring came in bunches for the Angels posting three runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. The first-inning rally started after a leadoff walk from senior
Mia Staggs. Lewis laid down a bunt which turned into two runs after the ball was thrown away and Lewis used her speed to touch every bag tying the game.
Sophomore
Avery Puryear would later single up the middle and come around to score off an RBI triple from sophomore
Tess Spangenburg giving the Angels the lead.
For the game, Lewis had another two-hit game with an RBI, and Staggs tallied an RBI as well. Sophomore
Mariah Bell had a three-hit game. Juniors
Gracie Massengale and
Jessie Woller both tallied two hits each.
Meredith is back in action at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic Friday afternoon when they battle Ferrum College at 1:30 p.m. and Denison University at 4 p.m.
