Avenging Angels Fall in Hard-Fought Match at Johnson & Wales

Pineville, N.C. — The Meredith College women's soccer team battled hard on Wednesday evening but fell 1–0 to Johnson & Wales at OrthoCarolina Sports.

First Half
Meredith started the match with energy, controlling possession and creating opportunities in the attacking third. Claire Wagner and Ellie Heney each tested the Johnson & Wales goalkeeper early, but strong defensive play and goalkeeping kept the match scoreless. The Avenging Angels maintained disciplined defense throughout the half, limiting the home team to just four shots.

Second Half
The second half saw continued pressure from both teams, Johnson & Wales broke through and scored the the only goal of the game. Meredith responded with multiple chances, including shots from Claire Wagner and Lucy Miller, and corner kicks by Grace Ensign and Francine Rest, but could not find the equalizer. Goalie Samantha Woodfin recorded four saves to keep Meredith within reach, and the defense held strong but Meredith ultimately lost the match.

Inside the Box Score
Meredith was led offensively by Claire Wagner, who tallied six shots with four on goal, and Ellie Heney, who added two shots with two on goal. Defensively, Samantha Woodfin made four saves, while the back line of Taylor Stewart, Ellie Heney, Isabella Stafford, and Lucy Miller provided solid support throughout the match. Despite the loss, the team showed determination and created multiple scoring opportunities against a tough opponent.

Next Match
The Avenging Angels return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Greensboro College. Meredith looks to rebound and continue building their momentum in USA South play.
