Angels Battle Hard in Home Loss to Southern Virginia

Raleigh, N.C. — The Meredith College volleyball team came out strong but ultimately fell 3–1 to Southern Virginia University on Saturday morning inside Weatherspoon Gymnasium. The Avenging Angels took the opening set in front of an energetic home crowd before the Knights rallied to claim the next three. Meredith now stands at 15–9 overall and 9–5 in USA South play.

How It Happened

Set 1 — Meredith 25, Southern Virginia 23
The Avenging Angels opened the match with poise and precision, led by Caitlyn Russell's powerful swings and steady defense from Megan Murray. Setter Lillie Davis distributed the ball efficiently, while freshman Daven Brabble added timely kills that helped Meredith close out the first set in thrilling fashion.

Set 2 — Southern Virginia 25, Meredith 12
Momentum shifted as the Knights found their rhythm early, forcing Meredith into several attack errors. Despite solid passing from Murray and hustle plays from Maddie Aveline, the Angels couldn't find consistency offensively and dropped the second frame.

Set 3 — Southern Virginia 25, Meredith 20
Meredith regrouped and battled through an evenly matched third set. Brabble and Sara Dees each came through with crucial kills to keep the Angels within striking distance, but Southern Virginia's blocking and transition play made the difference down the stretch.

Set 4 — Southern Virginia 25, Meredith 22
The final set featured multiple lead changes as both teams traded long rallies and defensive stops. Russell and Dees powered the attack, while Davis kept the offense flowing with quick sets and smart decision-making. Meredith fought to extend the match but came up just short as the Knights secured the road victory.
