RALEIGH, N.C. | Meredith College basketball won a hard-fought game 43-41 on Wednesday night against Greensboro College. The game came down to the final minute with both sides deadlocked at 41. With 45 seconds left, Danae Hawkins drove into the lane and picked up the foul. She made one free throw to give Meredith the lead. Next, Pam Mock made a great play, forcing a Greensboro turnover with 20 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Paris Bethea was fouled, and she made one of two free throws, giving the Avenging Angels a 43-41 lead. Taya Phelps missed the last second three and Meredith got the win.
Rylie Wade and Pam Mock both put up double doubles. Mock scored 12 points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds. Wade had 10 points and 14 rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Greensboro got off to a quick start, scoring the opening eight points. Meredith clawed back and ended the first with a free throw, a layup, and a three from Hawkins.
- Second Quarter Mock found success drawing fouls in the lane and made four free throws. On the next possession for Meredith, Kylie Wade grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up and in capping off a 6-0 run. Paris Bethea drained a three late in the quarter to give the Avenging Angels the 18-17 advantage at the break.
- Nataya Atwater hit a triple for Greensboro to start the third quarter. The Pride added back-to-back jumpers to take the 24-22 lead. Kendalyn Dixon and Hawkins knocked down jumpers to regain the lead. Taya Simpkins sparked the Pride's 8-0 run late in the quarter. She converted two layups and a free throw.
- Trailing by two going into the final frame, the Avenging Angels rattled off an 8-3 run. Mock skipped a pass to Bethea, who drained another one from distance. Simpkins wouldn't be denied and made two clutch layups to tie the game. Meredith's success at the free-throw line all game and down the stretch ultimately secured the victory.
- Meredith made 17-24 free throws compared to Greensboro's 5-7.
- The Avenging Angels won the board battle 45-36.
- Paris Bethea scored 11 points and went 3-4 from beyond the arc.
- Azuria Barrino led Greensboro's offense, scoring 11 points.
