Avenging Angels Battle Hard but Drop Doubleheader Against LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. | The Meredith College softball team hit the road to take on LaGrange College in a double header on Saturday (3/16) following their spring game slate. Despite strong performances at the plate and on the mound, the Avenging Angels came up short in both games, falling 3-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

"We had a great Spring Break week overall. We had some really special off the field moments and some exciting wins throughout the week. We are looking forward to our conference games starting next weekend." 
 
Game One: LaGrange 3  –  Meredith 2
Meredith struck early, taking the lead in the first inning as Mia Staggs Singled, stole second, and later crossed home on a LaGrange fielding error. The Angels added another run in the third when Emilee Lewis singled, stole second, and scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. 

Defensively, Lillie Davis kept the Panthers in check though the first three innings, allowing just one hit. However, LaGrange broke through in the fourth with a three-run inning. Despite a late-game double from Avery Puryear, Meredith was unable to push across the tying run. 
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mia Staggs stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Emilee Lewis added a hit, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Avery Puryear doubled in the sixth for one of Meredith's seven hits.
  • Lillie Davis pitched five innings, striking out three and limiting LaGrange to just six hits.
  • Rhyleigh Horne closed the game with a scoreless inning of relief.
 
Game Two: LaGrange 4  –  Meredith 2
The Avenging Angels battled back in Game 2, rallying in the sixth inning behind Ashbee Standridge's powerful solo home run to center field. Avery Puryear followed with a single, and Tess Spangenburg kept the rally going with a base hit of her own. Annabel Rocha brought in another run with an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to 4-2. 

On the mound, Rhyleigh Horne worked 3.1 innings in relief, keeping the Angels in the game before Emily Dorsey shut down the Panthers in the final two innings, holding them hitless.

  • Meredith returns home to prepare for their next matchup against Ferrum College on March 18th. The Avenging Angels will look to bounce back and build on their experiences from their spring games.
