QUOTING HEAD COACH KIM SCAVONE:
"The team did a great job responding in game two. I was excited to see some of our freshmen step into big roles and help us secure the win. Excited to see what they can do for the next three years."
GAME ONE:
Meredith jumped ahead early and stayed competitive through five innings, but a five-run frame by the Knights in the bottom of the fifth proved decisive. Southern Virginia took full advantage of several Meredith miscues, capitalizing on four errors in the field to fuel their offensive surge.
Designated player
Carson Griffith continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with a double, showcasing both power and consistency at the plate. Griffith's double in the sixth helped set up a run as Meredith fought to close the gap.
Avery Puryear also had a great game at the plate, collecting two hits, including a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that gave Meredith a 3–2 lead at the time. Puryear's RBI marked her steady contribution as a middle-of-the-order run producer.
Kaydon Roberson added to the offensive spark, going 2-for-2 with a walk, including an RBI single in the third that extended Meredith's early lead. Roberson later came around to score in the sixth, showcasing heads-up base running.
Despite the loss, Meredith totaled eight hits on the afternoon, matching Southern Virginia's output, but the Avenging Angels were undone by defensive lapses and the Knights' timely hitting.
Southern Virginia's Taelor Ware and Sophia Badell led the charge for the Knights, combining for four RBIs, with Ware's two-run double in the fifth, swinging the momentum firmly in SVU's favor. Pitcher Arianna Prymak earned the win in relief, tossing four innings and striking out three while allowing just two runs.
GAME TWO:
Meredith College bounced back in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, edging Southern Virginia 6–5 in a tightly contested matchup. The Avenging Angels leaned on timely hitting from
Carson Griffith and
Kaydon Roberson, as well as strong relief performances from
Emily Dorsey and
Kaylee Manning to secure the win.
Carson Griffith led the offensive attack with another standout performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Her third inning double to right center brought home
Avery Puryear and continued her hot streak at the plate after a multi-hit game earlier in the day.
Kaydon Roberson followed Griffith's double with a sharp single through the right side, adding an RBI of her own to extend Meredith's lead to 5–2. The second baseman also executed a sacrifice bunt, helping manufacture offense with smart situational play.
Meredith jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single from Puryear in the first and added four more in the third inning thanks to aggressive base running and well-placed hits.
Morgan Knight's sacrifice fly in the fifth added a crucial insurance run that proved to be the difference.
In the circle,
Emily Dorsey (1–1) earned her first win of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. She held Southern Virginia to just one hit while striking out one and working out of a jam in the third after entering with the game tied.
With a one-run lead heading into the sixth,
Kaylee Manning took over and slammed the door. Manning tossed two strong innings, allowing just one run and earning her first save of the year. She struck out one and stranded the potential tying run in the seventh to preserve the win.
For Southern Virginia, Katie Claytor was the offensive standout, launching a two-run homer in the first and adding a two-run double in the third, accounting for four of the Knights' five RBIs.
