RALEIGH, N.C. | Meredith College Lacrosse fell to Mary Washington 15-11 in a hard-fought game on Wednesday afternoon. Meredith had a great start, scoring the first two goals, but Mary Washington responded, and the first half was back-and-forth resulting in a 7-7 tie at the break.
The Avenging Angels couldn't find their rhythm on offense in the final two quarters. The Eagles capitalized in the second half, tallying three goals in the third and five in the fourth to secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Meredith had the start they needed in this highly competitive matchup. Kenzie Todd fielded a pass from Reese Walker and buried it into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. A minute later, Walker fought through a defender, took the shot, and scored to extend the Avenging Angel's lead to two.
- Mary Washington's Ashley Firesheets drew a free position opportunity with 8:41 to go in the quarter. She slung a hard shot, but Madi Horrell made a great stop to preserve the two-goal advantage.
- Ava Windham got the Eagles on the board late in the quarter, netting a free position goal. A minute later, Taylar Hackney scored to tie the game at two.
- Lauryn Turner created the shooting space she needed and ripped on past Cece Van Blenis to regain the lead. Tori Mueller responded for Mary Washington, scoring her first goal of the game to make it three all.
- The second quarter was similar to the first. Elle White and Todd scored for the Avenging Angels. White found Todd for another goal with 10:31 left in the half, which gave Meredith the 6-4 lead.
- Anna Dube and Maura Schroeder netted back-to-back goals to even the score at six. Ava Spradley used her quick speed, darting past a defender and whipping her shot into the back of the net. Molly Daw lofted a great pass to Abigail Fisher, who laced it past Horrell for the goal.
- At the half, the Avenging Angels and Eagles were tied at seven.
- The third quarter was all Mary Washington. They kept the ball in their offensive zone for most of the frame, resulting in goals from Molly Daw, Ava Windham, and Maura Schroeder.
- Meredith took three shots in the quarter, but Allison Carolan was up to task, making three big stops for the Eagles.
- Bailey Swails kicked off the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal to bring Meredith within two, 10-8. Mary Washington didn't flinch and scored three straight to open a five-goal advantage, 13-8. The Eagles would tack on two more tallies and Meredith's late scoring wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
- Mary Washington registered 36 shots to Meredith's 29. The Eagles also won 17 draw controls to the Angels 12.
- It was a physical contest with both sides earning penalties. Mary Washington was able to capitalize, scoring two man-up goals on seven Meredith penalties.
- Maura Schroeder led the Eagles scoring three goals on six shots. Mary Washington had four other players score two goals in the win.
- In the loss, Todd scored three goals and Walker recorded three points on a goal and two assists. Turner and Spradley each scored two goals.
- Madi Horrell made 12 saves in goal for Meredith.
