RALEIGH, N.C. – Southern Virginia scored one goal in each half and finished with 22 shots over the course of the game as it came away with a 2-0 victory over Meredith when the two teams met in USA South Conference action on Friday evening.
Southern Virginia converted the lone goal of the first half in the 14th minute when Ashley Hamblin drove headed a corner shot from teammate Rachel Bodkin for the 1-0 advantage. The second strike came on a corner as well, when Delin Peterson headed home a corner kick by Xoie Warner in the 87th minute.
The Knights offense controlled possession of the game in the opening half, finishing with nine shots (six shots on goal), with three shots apiece from Courtney Montes and Delin Peterson. Meanwhile, Southern Virginia goaltender Beth Manwell did not convert a save.
Meredith countered with two shots, which came from
Hannah Turner and
Claire Wagner.
Samantha Woodfin capped off her half with five saves in net.
Southern Virginia continued to hold possession in the second half, coming away with 13 shots (six SOG), while Meredith again had two. Both Montes and Warner shared the team lead in shots (five), while Peterson added four of her own.
Jenna Underwood and
Taylor Stewart had one shot each in the second half for the Avenging Angels.
Carter Knox manned the goal with five saves, while Manwill closed the night with two saves for Southern Virginia.
