RALEIGH, N.C. – The Meredith College women's basketball team put together a strong offensive showing but ultimately fell to N.C. Wesleyan, 71–65, in USA South Conference action on Wednesday evening at Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
The Avenging Angels shot an impressive 53.2 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range, keeping the game within reach throughout all four quarters. Meredith outscored N.C. Wesleyan in the third quarter, 19–9, to climb back into contention after trailing by double digits early.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
N.C. Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead, taking a 27–17 advantage after the first quarter. Meredith responded in the second, shooting over 58 percent from the field in the frame, but still trailed 43–32 at halftime.
The Avenging Angels delivered their best stretch of the night in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to just one point after outscoring the Battling Bishops by 10. Meredith's efficient shooting and defensive pressure helped swing momentum heading into the final period. Despite multiple late pushes, N.C. Wesleyan sealed the game at the free-throw line in the closing seconds.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Senior Leanna Nohs led Meredith with a game-high 20 points, adding three steals and three assists in 36 minutes of action. Molly Zuburg followed with 17 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting performance, including three three-pointers.
Skyler Setzer recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Jaymie Bevins contributed eight rebounds and four points. Meredith finished with 29 total rebounds and forced 21 turnovers, converting those into 23 points.
FINAL NOTES
Meredith held advantages in shooting percentage and fast-break points, but N.C. Wesleyan capitalized on second-chance opportunities and late free throws to secure the win. The Avenging Angels will look to take on Brevard at home on January 17th at 2pm.
