SWANNANOA, N.C. - In a game that came down to the final minutes, Meredith soccer prevailed late with a 1-0 road win at Warren Wilson on Thursday afternoon in Swannanoa, North Carolina.
Francine Rast continued her goal scoring barrage, finding the back of the net in the 84th minute to break the scoreless tie. From there, the Avenging Angels played lockdown defense to ice the game and come home with a shutout victory in the bank.
Both defenses were stout in the early going, leaving very little opening for the offenses to gain momentum. Each side was at just four shots apiece in the first half.
The Owls delivered a trio of shots on goal in the early to middle portion of the second half, but each time, Meredith goalkeeper
Delaney Thompson was up to the task with the save.
Then, with the clock ticking down under 10 minutes, the Avenging Angels earned a free kick opportunity on Warren Wilson's half. Freshman
Sam Carroll took the free kick and put it on frame, forcing the Warren Wilson goalkeeper to try to corral it.
Although Carroll's initial shot was stopped, Rast was in the right spot for the deflection, putting away the game winner for her third goal in the team's past five games.
The victory sends the team home on a high note, as next up they will host Greensboro this Saturday, October 24 at 6 p.m. on Senior Day.
