Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Dominates in USA South Opener, Sweep Brevard at Home

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Meredith College softball team returned home in dominant fashion on Saturday, sweeping a USA South Conference doubleheader against Brevard College. After a week of competition at The Spring Games in Florida, the Avenging Angels showed no signs of slowing down, combining for 20 runs across two games to secure a pair of convincing run-rule victories—both in five innings—to open conference play with momentum.

Game One: Meredith 9, Brevard 1 (5 innings)

Meredith wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back in a 9-1 victory in just five innings.

The Avenging Angels struck first in the opening inning behind an RBI triple from Tess Spangenburg followed by a run-scoring double from Lillie Davis. Meredith then broke the game open in the third inning, plating five runs on a flurry of timely hitting, including another RBI knock from Spangenburg and a two-run double from Davis. Freshman, Haleigh Moss added a two-RBI double in the inning to extend the advantage.

In the circle, Davis delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven to earn the win. Meredith's offense totaled 12 hits in the contest, with Spangenburg leading the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance and three runs scored. Davis also helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Game Two: Meredith 11, Brevard 1 (5 innings)

The Avenging Angels carried that momentum into game two, erupting for 11 runs in another five-inning run-rule victory.

After Brevard plated a run in the third, Meredith responded immediately with a seven-run inning fueled by aggressive base running and disciplined at-bats. Mariah Bell delivered a key RBI single, while Ashbee Standridge drove in two runs to highlight the rally. Meredith capitalized on defensive miscues and continued to pressure throughout the inning.

The offense stayed hot in the fourth, adding four more runs to put the game out of reach. Bell finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Emilee Lewis and Haleigh Moss each recorded multi-hit games.

Davis once again controlled the game in the circle, tossing five innings and allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out five to complete the sweep.
