RALEIGH, N.C. – The Meredith College softball team earned a hard-fought split against Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon, walking off Game One in extra innings before coming up just short in the nightcap.
Game One: Meredith 3, Guilford 2 (8 innings)
After surrendering two runs in the opening frame, Lillie Davis settled into a dominant rhythm in the circle. The right-hander regrouped quickly and did not allow another run over the final seven innings, keeping Guilford off the scoreboard despite steady traffic on the bases. Davis worked efficiently, trusted her defense, and delivered timely outs to give the Avenging Angels a chance to rally.
One of the most pivotal defensive moments came in the seventh inning. With a Guilford runner attempting to stretch a double into a triple, Tess Spangenburg fielded the ball cleanly and fired a strike to third to cut the runner down and erase a scoring threat. The heads-up play preserved the one-run margin and shifted momentum back to Meredith.
Offensively, the Angels chipped away late. Spangenburg tripled in the sixth and later scored to put Meredith on the board. In the seventh, aggressive baserunning from Laycie Eastwood forced pressure on the Guilford defense, leading to the game-tying run.
In the international tiebreaker eighth inning, Meredith capitalized. After a sacrifice moved the placed runner to third, Spangenburg delivered again with a single up the middle to walk it off, sealing the 3-2 victory.
Game Two: Guilford 5, Meredith 4
The second game featured strong work in the circle from Rhyleigh Horne. She threw five solid innings and allowed just two runs, keeping Meredith within striking distance and setting up the Angels' late push.
Defensively, the Angels shined in the outfield. Meredith tracked down multiple deep fly balls, making key catches to prevent extra-base hits and keep the game within reach. From running grabs in the gaps to composed plays near the fence, the defensive execution kept momentum on Meredith's side through much of the contest.
At the plate, Ashbee Standridge provided a spark with a solo home run to tie the game in the third inning. The Angels later took a 4-2 lead in the sixth behind productive situational hitting, including a sacrifice fly from Gracie Ritchie and heads-up baserunning that manufactured an additional run.
Guilford responded with a late rally in the seventh, plating three runs to edge ahead 5-4. Meredith threatened in the bottom half with consecutive base hits, but the tying run was left stranded as the Quakers held on.
Final Notes
Meredith's resilience defined the day. Davis' composed performance in the circle after the first inning of Game One, Spangenburg's defensive awareness and clutch hitting, and standout outfield defense in Game Two highlighted a competitive showing from the Avenging Angels. Eastwood also made her presence felt in center field with outstanding hustle plays, tracking down balls in the gap and consistently covering ground to limit extra-base opportunities.
Meredith will look to build on the strong pitching, defensive execution, and late-inning momentum as the season continues.
