Meredith Sweeps Crosstown Rival William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Meredith College Avenging Angels delivered a strong showing in USA South Conference play on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping crosstown rival William Peace University in a doubleheader on the road. Behind dominant pitching and timely hitting, Meredith secured a pair of shutout victories to continue building momentum in conference competition.

Game One: Meredith 5, William Peace 0

Meredith opened the doubleheader with a complete performance, combining timely offense, clean defense, and dominant pitching to secure a 5-0 shutout over the Pacers.

The Avenging Angels struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on early pressure as Emilee Lewis set the tone at the top of the lineup and came around to score on an error. Meredith broke the game open in the third inning with a four-run surge, highlighted by an RBI single from Tess Spangenburg and a two-RBI knock from Lillie Davis to extend the lead to 4-0. The Angels added an additional run in the fourth when Morgan Knight sparked the inning, advancing into scoring position and eventually scoring on a Mariah Bell RBI single.

Defensively, Meredith was steady throughout, turning in a composed performance behind Davis in the circle. The Angels limited William Peace to just four hits and consistently shut down threats, including working out of traffic in the fifth inning to maintain the shutout.

Davis was in command from start to finish, tossing a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts while allowing just one walk. Offensively, Bell led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Lewis and Knight each scored twice and helped create scoring opportunities with aggressive baserunning.

Game Two: Meredith 2, William Peace 0

Meredith completed the sweep with a disciplined and defensively sharp performance in game two, holding William Peace scoreless behind strong play in the field and another dominant outing in the circle.

The Avenging Angels broke through in the fourth inning when Tess Spangenburg reached and later scored on an RBI single from Ashbee Standridge, giving Meredith the early 1-0 advantage. From there, the Angels relied on steady defense and timely pitching to keep the Pacers off the board, stranding runners and limiting scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Meredith added a key insurance run in the seventh inning with a well-executed sequence. Morgan Knight led off the inning with a hard single to left field, then immediately applied pressure by stealing second. After advancing on Abigail Holt's at-bat, Knight came around to score on a line drive off the bat of Emilee Lewis, extending the lead to 2-0 and providing breathing room late.

In the circle, Lillie Davis was once again in control, tossing her second complete-game shutout of the day. She allowed just five hits while striking out six, working efficiently through all seven innings. The Meredith defense backed her effort with clean play and key outs in critical moments to secure the shutout victory.
