Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Takes Down CNU in Game Two

RALEIGH, N.C. – In a competitive non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, Meredith softball hosted a strong Christopher Newport University (CNU) squad. The Avenging Angels responded in a big way in game two, earning their first win over the Captains since 2017 while holding CNU to its lowest run total against Meredith since 2019.

Christopher Newport entered the season as one of the nation's top programs, appearing in the NFCA Division III Top 25 until March 31 and climbing as high as No. 9 nationally. Though currently outside the rankings, the Captains remain a top regional contender—adding further significance to Meredith's game two victory.

Game 1: Christopher Newport 10, Meredith 6

CNU used a steady offensive attack to take the opener, but Meredith showed fight throughout, highlighted by a four-run second inning that briefly swung momentum.

The Avenging Angels capitalized on timely hitting early, with Tess Spangenburg delivering a key two-RBI single to help Meredith erase an early deficit and take a 4-2 lead. Emilee Lewis and Rhyleigh Horne each contributed RBI singles in the frame as Meredith strung together quality at-bats.

CNU answered in the middle innings to regain control, but Meredith continued to compete late, plating two runs in the sixth to close the gap. Spangenburg finished with a team-high four RBIs, while Meredith's pitching staff worked to limit further damage down the stretch.

Game 2: Meredith 4, Christopher Newport 3

Meredith responded with a statement performance in game two, using timely hitting and a dominant outing in the circle to secure the victory.

After falling behind 3-1 in the third inning, the Avenging Angels answered immediately with a three-run rally. Ashbee Standridge delivered a clutch two-RBI double to tie the game, and Lillie Davis followed with an RBI double to give Meredith a 4-3 advantage.

From there, Davis took control, tossing a complete game and holding the Captains scoreless over the final four innings. Her efficiency and composure in the circle proved to be the difference as Meredith closed out the win.

At the plate, Emilee Lewis led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Haleigh Moss added an RBI double to support the offense.
