Late Rally Falls Short, Angels Drop Road Contest at Mary Washington, 14-12

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Meredith College lacrosse mounted a strong second-half comeback effort but ultimately fell short in a 14-12 road loss to Mary Washington on Wednesday evening at Battleground Turf.

The Avenging Angels move to 10-3 on the season following the tightly contested non-conference matchup.

Meredith saw a balanced offensive performance with five players recording multiple points. Kenzie Todd and Bailey Swails each led the way with three goals apiece, while Logan Campbell added two goals and an assist. Reese Walker contributed a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, helping spark the second-half push.

After an early back-and-forth start, Meredith found itself trailing 9-5 at halftime as Mary Washington capitalized on strong draw control play and efficient scoring opportunities. The Eagles controlled the pace early, outshooting Meredith 20-10 in the first half.

The Avenging Angels responded in the third quarter, putting together their strongest stretch of the game. Meredith outscored Mary Washington 4-2 in the period, highlighted by goals from Campbell, Walker, and Mia Frick to cut the deficit to 11-9 heading into the final quarter.

Mary Washington extended its lead early in the fourth, pushing the margin to 14-9 with just under nine minutes to play. Meredith refused to back down, closing the game on a 3-0 run behind goals from Walker, Todd, and Swails in the final minutes, but time ran out on the comeback bid.

Defensively, Meredith was led by Ariana Rundgren with four caused turnovers, while Reagan Amiott added four ground balls. Goalkeeper Delaney Posehn finished with six saves in the contest.

Meredith held advantages in ground balls (22-20) and matched Mary Washington with 19 turnovers forced, but the Eagles' edge in draw controls (20-7) proved to be a key difference.

The Avenging Angels will look to bounce back as they return to conference play in their next outing.
