Soccer Suffers OT Loss to Captains

Box Score

NEWORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport Captains scored a game winning goal with 31 seconds remaining in overtime to steal a win from Meredith College in today's USA South action.

In an aggressive league battle with a combined 29 fouls for both teams, bragging rights came down to a throw-in from CNU's Carly Utterback with seconds left in OT. The pitch towards the goal line led to a game winner from Emma O'Reilly and the fifth loss for Avenging Angels' goalie Kelsey Hopper.

The Captains opened the scoring with a long punt from Chelsea Wolfe in what would be her second assist on the day. Wolfe delivered the ball to Dani Gunderson to give Christopher Newport a 1-0 lead at 19:42.

With plenty of time remaining on the clock, Meredith wasted no time charging ahead. Just 5:26 later in the first frame, Jessie Davis finessed the ball from a defender at the top of the box and cleared the goalie to even the score.

The defensive battle resumed after the break with neither team reaching the net through 45 minutes. The 1-1 tie forced a ten minute overtime period.

The host would not allow a shot from Meredith during the extra period.

The Avenging Angels return home and must regroup before facing The Greensboro Pride and Averett in a home field series next weekend. Meredith Head Coach Paul Smith will recognize his three seniors Sunday during the event.
