RALEIGH, N.C. - The sixth-seeded Meredith soccer team is set to begin postseason play, traveling west to take on No. 3 seed Greensboro in the USA South Tournament First Round.
The matchup is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow, October 31.
LAST TIME OUT:
Meredith 2, N.C. Wesleyan 0 (10/28/26)
Meredith soccer closed out its regular season in style on Wednesday afternoon, securing a key road win at N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount.
The win allowed the Avenging Angels to leap past the Battling Bishops in the conference standings, as Meredith has now earned the No. 6 seed for the upcoming USA South Tournament.
In the game's opening minutes, it was a well-timed cross from freshman
Sam Carroll that led to a deflection to
Evelyn Hopkins in front of the goal, and Hopkins put it away cleanly to give MC the 1-0 lead.
The Avenging Angels took advantage early in the second half on a double assist that started with
Claire Wagner, leading to another great feed from Hopkins that found the foot of
Rachel Ward, who unleashed a shot from a tough angle. However, Ward hit it perfectly, as it floated just beyond the outstretched arms of N.C. Wesleyan's goalkeeper and into the left corner of the net. The goal marked Ward's team-leading sixth of the season.
REGULAR SEASON VS. THE PRIDE
Greensboro 1, Meredith 0 (10/24/26)
Meredith soccer honored its eight seniors before battling Greensboro tough in a 1-0 loss at home just one week ago in Raleigh.
When the game got started, it was a defensive battle most of the way throughout, with neither side able to generate much headway offensively.
Midway through the second half, the Avenging Angels generated a chance as
Rachel Ward broke through the defense. However, the Greensboro goalkeeper was in the right spot to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
From there, the Pride began to gain momentum, and eventually converted the game winner on a blast from outside the box from Isabella Kelly that hit off the bottom of the crossbar before falling into the back of the net.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Ward has saved her best for last, enjoying a standout senior season. She leads the team with six goals and is coming in on a hot streak, having scored last time out against N.C. Wesleyan to close out the regular season.
