Lee's Game Winner Secures 1-0 Victory Over Pride

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College Avenging Angels soccer squad posted a 1-0 victory over Greensboro in today's USA South event. Meredith improved to 7-2 in the conference and remains in third place in regular season standings. The loss dropped The Pride to 5-4 in the league, 6-9 overall.

The defensive battle of the first 45 minutes of play left both teams scoreless. Meredith out shot the visitors 3-1 in the first frame with neither team creating an opportunit y at a corner kick. MC's junior goalie Kelsey Hopper grabbed her 66th save in the half for her sixth shutout this fall.

The Avenging Angels controlled the ball much of the second half and would need just one shot on goal to secure the win in regulation.

In the 83rd minute junior Jessie Davis enjoyed an uncontested kick just above the center box after a Greensboro foul but sent the ball too high.

Meredith maintained the offensive pressure during the next 59 seconds of play when the Smithfield sophomore Danielle Lee found the back right corner of the net for the win. Davis and sophomore Sarah Varnell setup the play.

The Avenging Angels host league-leader Averett University (11-3, 8-0 USA South) in a 2 p.m. contest Sunday afternoon. Head Coach Paul Smith will celebrate his three seniors just prior to kickoff.
