Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Meredith Avenging Angels fell 1-0 in overtime to Randolph College to wrap up this week's non-conference action. MC slipped to 9-4 on the season, while the WildCats improved to 7-5 overall.
In what appeared to be an offensive clinic by the Avenging Angels who out shot Randolph 21-5, the WildCat defense controlled the outcome of the 90 minute regulation.
Meredith made a charge at the end of the first period jump started on one of nine corner kicks from Jessie Davis. WildCat goalie Hunter Gibson defended an attempt from Carrie Talbert on the play. Fifty-four seconds later Taylor Brown created another opportunity that sailed just wide of the frame.
Davis picked up after the break with another corner kick to Kimberly Williams who aimed just right of the net.
An offensive attack from the Avenging Angels in the final eight minutes of regulation proved ineffective and led to a 10 minute overtime period.
Meredith's Anna Smitherhad a quick opportunity at the goal in the opening seconds of OT, but Gibson protected her net. And Davis' lone overtime corner was the final misstep for the Avenging Angels.
WildCat Marielle Rando controlled the ball in the 94th minute and found teammate Melisa Rodriguez on the rightside of the field. Rodriguez sailed the ball out of reach of Meredith's keeper Kelsey Hopper to find the back corner of the net for a score and the win.
Hopper and Gibson earned three saves apiece in the disappointing Meredith loss.
The Avenging Angels travel next weekend to Virginia for USA South pairings with Mary Baldwin (4-6, 0-6 USAS) Saturday, October 13, followed by a visit to Christopher Newport (5-8, 3-3 USAS) Sunday.
