Burlington, N.C. - The Meredith tennis team took down the Christopher Newport Captains 6-3 and will move to their fourth consecutive USA South Women's Tennis Championship final. The #1 seeded Avenging Angels will face #3 Methodist on Sunday for the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Meredith fell behind early in doubles as #3 Mollie Musgrave/Ashley Pearsall fell 8-3 but saw victories from #1 Puja Patel/Caroline Hunt (8-6) and #2 Mary Lawrence Newton/Betty Edwards (8-6). This gave the Avenging Angels the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The Captains tied things up at 2-all as #2 Hunt fell 6-1, 6-1. Meredith then went on a streak to gain three wins in a row to seal the win. #5 Edwards took her match 6-3, 6-1 while #1 Patel won easily 6-1, 6-0. #4 Pearsall sealed the win for Meredith with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The remaining matches had #6 Musgrave taking her match 7-6, 6-2 and #3 Newton falling in three sets.
Meredith will play for the title at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Burlington Tennis Center.
