Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith's freshman forward Taylor Brown scored the game winner in today's 3-2 conference win over the visiting Lions of Piedmont College.
Meredith remains perfect in the USA South with its third straight conference win. The Lions dropped to 1-2 in conference play, 6-3 overall.
Both teams battled in the first frame with the Avenging Angels outshooting PC 10-4. With just over five minutes remaining in the half, senior Kimberly Williams lobbed one to Brown who drove in the goal for a 1-0 lead going into the break.
Meredith maintained the momentum after the intermission forcing two of six second half corner kicks in the opening minutes of play. Anna Smither capitalized on the second kick from Jessie Davis to give her team a 2-0 lead.
The Piedmont offense stepped up their effort and drove in back-to-back goals from Taylor Hockley to tie the match at two's.
Lions' keeper Marjorie Hammond grabbed a shot from Smither and tried to send the ball back down the field. But sophomore midfielder Morgan Edwards regained control and pushed the ball up the sideline for an attack on the Piedmont defense yet again. Carrie Talbert stepped in to assist and fed Brown for the winning goal in the 83rd minute.
Junior keeper Kelsey Hopper tallied six saves in as many wins on the season.
The Avenging Angels travel to Maryville, Tennessee, next Saturday for a conference match with the Scots. The team caps off the weekend with a stop in Virginia to face the Panthers of Ferrum College Sunday, September 30, at 2 p.m.
